Unit price is the last number in the chain. These are the decisions upstream that set it — most of them made before anyone asks for a quote.
Setup cost divided by batch size
Feeder setup, stencil, programming and first-article inspection are largely fixed per run. On a 25-piece batch they dominate the unit price; on 2,500 they disappear into it. Before renegotiating unit price, check whether combining two runs into one setup gets you further.
This is also why a slightly larger order is often cheaper in total, not just per unit.
Unique part count, not total part count
A board with 400 placements across 40 line items is cheaper to build than one with 200 placements across 90 line items. Every unique part is a feeder slot, a purchase order line, an incoming inspection and a stocking decision. Consolidating resistor and capacitor values is the least glamorous cost reduction available and one of the most reliable.
Process count
Every additional process — double-sided reflow, wave solder, selective solder, hand assembly, conformal coating — is another pass through the factory with its own setup and yield. Moving three through-hole connectors to surface-mount equivalents can remove an entire process step.
Test coverage versus field cost
Test is a real cost and it is also insurance. The right level is set by what a field failure costs you — a warranty swap on a consumer product and a service call on an industrial installation justify very different fixtures.
Sourcing strategy
Buying on the open market when a franchised part is on allocation looks fast and shows up later as counterfeit risk and traceability gaps. Approving alternates early, at design stage, is what keeps you out of that trade entirely.
Freight and duty
Quoted ex-works pricing hides a real number. Consolidated shipments, correct HS classification and the right Incoterm often move landed cost more than another round of unit-price negotiation.
